no luck with the archives

As a computer novice, I have searched  the archives with no luck for an
answer.
I have an IBM Aptiva which came with Win 95.  I upgraded to Win 98 SE.
Coincidentally my computer now starts itself several times a day!  There
does not seem to be a pattern.  I have disabled all scheduled tasks, etc.  I
can hear the modem attempt also attempting connection without result.
Whatever have I done?  Thank you for any help.
