Sorry, this has taken so long, but have been very busy. I got numerous
responses regarding definitions and terms, as well as info re cell
regeneration in the gut. Many people made it clear that celiac, sprue,
gluten enteropathy are one and the same. Healing time depends on the
amount of damage that has been done before diagnosis. An intolerance is a
lifelong condition, whereas allergies can be fixed or cyclical and can
depend on the amount eaten (although tiny amounts can cause significant
reactions). It takes time to build up nutritional deficiencies after a
period of malabsorption. Below, some particulars:

"Gluten allergy" is probably intended to mean celiac also, but it's a
complete misnomer, as are the others. Actually it's not really gluten that
is the offending substance for us: corn, rice and other foods have gluten
in them too. It's really the gliadin in the gluten in wheat, rye and barley
that offends us (commercially grown oats are always loaded with stray wheat
kernels so also a no no).

Wheat allergy should present differently: it should cause what allergies
cause, rash, itching, breathing difficulties, mental problems, anaphylactic
shock, etc. But some celiacs are also allergic to wheat. A wheat allergy
should leave rye and barley as edible choices.

-----------------

... wheat/gluten allergy would be a reaction based on the IgE antibodies,
while CD/gluten intolerance is based on the IgA and IgG antibodies. The
allergic reaction could result in anaphylactic shock that could lead to
rapid death, but the intolerance is not likely to do that, just result in
long, slow damage ...

-----------------

The word allergy refers to an IgE-mediated response from the immune system
where it is producing histamines. And antihistamines are used to control
it. An intolerance is an IgA and/or IgG immune response of the digestive
system. Sometimes called food sensitivities. Lactose intolerance is
mislabeled. It properly should be called lactose maldigestion, since there
is no immune system involvement, but a lack of enzymes needed for digestion.

-----------------

Some of the cells that are destroyed by CD are plasma cells (cells that
produce other cells) that contribute to a healthy gut. These are not
the same structures (villi) that are viewed during biopsies to determine
if someone has CD. The plasma cells may take years to regenerate (if at
all) and function normally again. Without them there will be digestive
problems and dietary intolerances. The cells that are viewed during the
biopsy regenerate every 3 days in a normal individual; it only takes 3
regenerations (about 9 days) to mask the damage from CD once a gluten
free diet is started.

-----------------

For an excellent explanation of "Allergy vs intolerance" go to
http://www.celiac.com for information.

-----------------

ok food allergies make one break out in hives ,pimples, asthma , sore
throats, things like this. intolerances like starchy foods bring on
hypoglycemia, diarrhea, constipation , vomiting, I hope this helps

-----------------

Food allergies can also have GI effects: causing or maintaining leaky gut.

Thank you for all who responded!
