I tend to agree with Larry, but I have some other questions.

questions to consider:

- if you pop the hard drive in a known working machine, do the errors go
away? (this at least eliminates the drive itself, although I don't really
suspect it)
- what files do the GPFs/illegal operations relate to?
- what error did you get, if any, when Windows wouldn't start? would it
start in safe mode?
- have you scanned for viruses?

I'd probably swap the memory first, but these are a few brief ideas. Let us
know how it works out.
