Hello,

I have been trying to assemble a computer for a family member, but have ran
into hard drive problem/s
that have me "stumped."

I am trying to partition, format and boot from a hard drive, however,
things do go wrong. I have
tried this with three different hard drives, with no success, using a
Windows 98 SE, Windows 95,
and DOS 6.22 Start-Up disks, each made from different computers.

Currently, I am using a MAXTOR hard drive, Model No. 90840D6, which BIOS
reads automatically as
LBA, UDMA2, 8400 MB, whenever the computer is turned on. The hard drive has
four partitions, "C"
thru "F." The "C, D and E" partitions are 2047 MB each, and the "F"
partition is 1867 MB. The CPU
is a AMD K6-2, 450 MHz, total RAM, 131072 K, and motherboard, EPOX, EP-MVP3G.

Sometimes I can boot from the "C" drive with no problem at all, and at
other times, the computer
system locks up. A "DIR C:" command shows COMMAND.COM at 93890 bytes, with
a total 2,146,009,088
bytes free for the "C" drive.

Attempts at booting from the "A" drive will sometimes lock up the computer
system, displaying the
error message:
                    RUN-TIME ERROR M6111:MATH
                    -FLOATING-POINT ERROR: STACK UNDERFLOW
THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS WERE SUCCESSFULLY LOADED TO DRIVE G.

Believing initially that there was a virus, or viruses doing mischief, I
have attempted to check
hard drives and floppies with both McAfee and Norton to no avail, because
neither program would completely load. I still suspect the presence of
viral activity, but I have no way of actually
finding out for sure, or identifying the virus, or a method of removal, if
present.

Any suggestions towards a solution of my computer problem/s will be greatly
appreciated. Please
help, thank you.
