Multimedia accessibility is advancing from alt text for images to providing audio description for the action in TV and movies.
You ought to try it!
Major cinemas are now equipped with audio descriptions on their movies and small personal devices for users to hear those descriptions. Stop at the customer help desk and ask for the device to provide audio descriptions for the blind and visually impaired. It plays a special sound track on the film. During gaps in the dialogue, the user can hear the recorded description of relevant actions.

EASI Webinar Special Bonus EASI is offering a bonus that will let you join the 4-part Webinar series by Karen McCall on advanced features in Microsoft Word. Most of us use the same 10-20 features we taught ourselves a long time ago. At least, I confess that is my situation. Most of us author our work in Word and then sometimes repurpose it for other file formats. It

Some of you who have been around a while may know or remember Joe Lazzaro, who ran the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind Technology Program and wrote two books about Assistive Technologies -- Adaptive Technologies for Learning and Work Environments, and Adapting PCs for Disabilities. Joe passed away suddenly on November 18th.
Very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Joe and I served together as contributing editors on the first iteration of EASI's journal, Information Technology and Disabilities, which is preparing to put together a 20th anniversary issue. Hopefully there can be a little tribute to Joe when the issue comes out in 2014. I'll certainly miss his presence on the Internet.

The best way for you to do that is by obtaining and using a Firefox toolbar called, WAVE. At the NFB conference last December (2011) the folks from CourseSmart presented. Steve is correct that self identified students get a different login that takes them to unprotected areas. Here they get HTML versions of the digital books. As of last December, they were still primarily a PDF process and the PDF is converted to their proprietary format; the accessible versions go to HTML. They provided information about their automatic process. One point made was that if students commented on the quality, or lack of the quality, then they would put it through a process to upgrade from the automatic
Illinois had an opportunity to join the Educause trial program with Course Smart, but one of the reasons I was told Illinois did not apply is the concerns over accessibility of the technology to people with disabilities.

I am excited about the July 4-part wWebinar series on accessible multimedia. Actually, this will be more than just 4 hour-long Webinars. I am finishing the preparations for weeks 1-2 and believe it is going to be a genuine learning experience. Webinars can be a passive spectator activity. This time I am adding assignments based closely on the Webinars with step-by-step assignments to have you create accessible multimedia yourself. Week 1, July 10, is on creating audio. It will include creating audio, cutting and pasting, changing volume levels, fading in and out, merging tracks with speeking over top of background

The EASI site should be available now. The problem was not with the site as such. There are name tables on the Internet that change the address you are seeking so it turns into corresponding numbers. One of those tables had an error in it, but it is now corrected. This means your browser should be able to find us now. It is possible that in a couple regions, it may take a little time for it to catch up.

Because I have zero vision, I am unable to check my understanding of CSS by trying it and seeing how it looks. Otherwise, I could probably answer my own questions by trial and error.
You mentioned padding and margins. In my mind, they sound sort of like the same thing but I guess not. Here is my guess and you can straighten me out...... I can set up a border. Then the padding will be the space between the border and the edges of the monitor. I can also set up margins and that will be the space inside
Great questions. Think of the "margin" as the area around a page, or in this case around the screen. So you can have a margin that places content at a margin of 10% from the left, right, top or bottom of the screen.
Padding is correct, the space between the border and the text inside the "box" or border. You can - or should be able to - use the padding inside a table much like you use cell margins in Word to put space between the gridlines and the text in a cell...but that is for next week.
Could you again clarify the difference between the way the padding and the margin features work? At 10:06 AM 2/9/2012, you wrote: >Norm: > >Great questions. I'll build this into next week with some examples.

Thanks again for a highly informative presentation.
You mentioned, I think in week 1, that an individual can create a personal css and instruct his or her browser to use the personal css and over ride the Web designers css. Once I have created a personal.css how do I set up my browser to use it as my css????
Another great question and I'll build that into next week's lesson.
In IE go to Tools, Internet Options and on the Press Alt + E for the Accessibility button. This will open the Accessibility dialog and the last check box is to use your own style sheet. Once you check this check box, you'll be able to browse for your style sheet and then it will be used on any web page that lets you do so.
Karen gave us another set of great tips on CSS. Last week and this week archives are ready including, slides, recording and transcription.

I want to be sure everyone from the CSS Webinar series is on this EASI discussion list. No, do not reply to this as everyone on the list will get more than a dozen messages annoying everyone. Instead send me personal mail saying that you got the email from me and send it to [log in to unmask]
I've asked Norm to set this list up for the next four weeks. After the last webinar please contact me directly at [log in to unmask]
I've created a sample web site for you to work with and will be adding pages for you each week. Not to worry, only a couple more pages, one specifically on tables and any others as needed to demonstrate technique. The files are zipped so you will need to unzip them. Let me know if you need instructions.
Please be patient with me. I couldn't figure out any way to solve my need for a listserv for a month problem and so I am closing this list for the month of February.
I'll put your names back on the listserv early in March and email you a notice that the listserv is back.
We are sponsoring a 4-part Webinar series in February, and we need a way for the participants to have a discussion. I'll send you all a notice, but I'll take this offline for February and then activate it again in March.
Please forgive me and please be patient. Norm

Eric Stoller, a blogger and speaker in higher ed student affairs, who also happens to care about accessibility, published this post today expressing continued frustration over Vimeo's lack of captioning capability. http://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/dear-vimeo-patience-isnt-option
I experimented forwarding the event e-mail I received, but the URLs did not appear. For those of you interested in the 27th annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities conference, here are some useful URLs. Registration does open December 5. The rate does go up as of January 12, so register early if you can.
