And thanks for the replies. My investigations have led me to believe that Xilisoft Video Converter is best suited to my task (found using the link below). Other programs I used wouldn't work, or worked poorly. Xilisoft advertises that it contains all the necessary codecs for the conversions it can do, and it certainly works well with my .mov to .avi conversion. I then used ULead DVD PictureShow to create the VCDs and all worked well.
