  The box is not checked.  I have never used MSN Messenger and I never had
that little guy down there by the clock until I installed WindowsME (which I
do happen to like very much).  I guess I just better get used to him because
I just can't make him go away.

All you need to do is remove MSN Messenger from your startup. Start the
program. When it opens go to Tools/Options/, select the Preferences tab and
uncheck the box that says "Run This Program When Windows Starts"
