You may have said this below, but just to be sure...
They should have "installed" MSIE6, then UNINSTALLED
it, and then - having reverted (automatically) to whatever the
OS came with originally RE-Installed 5.5 and all patches.

It is a little "fuzzy" what you mean about "repair tools"...
What they are trying to do is SOOO much more than a "repair"
that might be the cause of the entire problem...
(I hope so.)

In any event, at this point the above is still a good idea to "clean-up"
what they are left with now...

Since the Browser is tightly wrapped around the OS, they
"should" follow "best practices" and get some or all of their
important data backed-up in case they have to "bite the bullet"
and do the whole format thing...
