I'll reply to my own post as a lister connected me offlist with a possible
solution.

Apparently the method of changing the password is to enter the password when
prompted, follow it with a forward slash, enter the new password, add
another forward slash, then hit Enter.

Or, if the aim is to remove the password: Enter the password, follow it with
two forward slashes then hit Enter.

This has just been confirmed by a Compaq tech.

Only trouble is - I can't make it work :--))
