If you do not currently have any data on the D: drive, the easiest way to do
what you want is to reformat the disk. Also, you could copy your data to
C:, reformat, and copy back. You could even FDISK it to create logical
drives for organizing data, if you wanted to. That way you have a clean,
unfragmented disk to work with.

XP does not support DOS, per se. If you had a DOS boot disk from an earlier
installation, you could use it; I don't know if it would work on an XP
system file.

There may be better ideas from someone. It could be just a matter of
changing the access privilege, but I don't know if that would work in XP, as
I have not been using it long.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Boot to DOS

> How to boot directly to DOS on a Win XP Pro machine?

> Installed a new C: drive and installed new copy of Win XP there. Moved
old HDD to D: in the same machine, and the old installation of Win XP is
there also. Want to use the D: drive ONLY for data storage, and get rid of
the old Win XP thereon. I've been able to do that except for the 'Documents
and Settings' folder. If simply try to delete d:\documents and settings
from the new XP environment, it says 'access denied.' So I suspect I'll have
to boot directly into DOS to get around this.
