Since you have not gotten very far, and WANT to remove
all data and software on the harddrive,  I would say get and
use one the following.
Zap and Wipe are at:
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Zap will erase the first 128 clusters of the drive and remove
anything that will interfere with a proper FDISK AND Format.
