Good suggestions!  But I would make one tiny amendment.

When swapping parts (ESPECIALLY the cpu) I would put
the suspect part into the working machine....
just in case something in your PC is "eating" the parts.
No sense turning a friend into an enemy by frying his CPU. <grin>

One last thought.... have you TRIPLE checked *ALL* the jumpers on the
motherboard?
And have you turned the case upside down and shaken it (lightly) to see if
extra screws fall out?
(Yea, I know, that was two last thoughts....)
