You've already gotten some excellent advice from Dave Gillett and Marc
Cockerill. But just in case that doesn't work...

Lightning damage is certainly a consideration; that happened to me once when a
lightning stroke hit a tree across the road, jumped to the telco drop that
ran through the tree, and then over the road into my house. It killed my
modem, answering machine and one of our telephones. My neighbor, in addition
to having a broken tree in his front yard, also lost his answering machine
and several telephones.

However, before you replace your modem, I'd suggest verifying that it is
properly seated in the slot (assuming it is an internal modem -- if not,
check the cable). If that appears to be OK, then verify that your BIOS
setting haven't changed (unlikely, but easy to check), and finally, try the
hardware uninstall/reinstall drill. Still no joy? If you've got another modem
laying around, give it a try. Otherwise, perhaps it's time to go to the
store.
