Is it only your computer connected directly to the cable modem? Is it connected to a switchbox on a network with other computers? If the latter, what kind of switchbox? I have a Linksys 4-port router/switchbox which randomly and fairly frequently now drops the connection. I have to pull the power plug to the router/switchbox (BEFSR41) for a minute, then plug it back in. That usually fixes the disconnect. If you are connected directly to the cable modem and the modem shows a connection to the Internet with a lighted LED, then the problem is in your modem or computer.
