Which part took the unusually long time---the software part (ie the shrink 
part, which is normally pretty slow, about 1/2 hour on mine for a DVD 
movie) or the actual burn time?

It's important to know, as this may help identify where the problem is 
occurring.

My immediate guess, from the symptoms you describe, is that something is 
running in the background and interfering with these processes.

Have you checked fully for trojans etc? Is anything scheduled to run such 
as updates or scans of any sort?

Try running Task Manager and manually closing down ALL background activity.

I'm not sure if you can burn in Safe Mode, but it might be worth 
trying.  If that is successful it would eliminate many possibilities.

Assuming XP, open Services and disable all the known resource hogs --- 
Indexing Service is often the main culprit here.

You seem at least to have eliminated a faulty DVD burner.
