Lydia, I recently did what you want. Buy one of those cheap external
  hard drive cases, connect a drive as a master (without the case) to a USB   port (if you have 2K or XP). When your computer finds it,(mass storage unit,
  removeable unit) in MY COMPUTER, right click and FORMAT the drive. It will even assign a drive letter! It works great AND it will even erase anything on
