I really recommend you get a copy of Fagin's book, he goes over the ideas of
the reasoning of this diet approach with a plethora of references. That

He uses this diet to maintain a lean body weight also. The main difference
is
that you can add more 'carb up' meals during the week. You start at twice a
week,
evening meals and you may progress to every other day. The key here is to
see
where you start gaining again. Also, the carb up meals for losing body fat
are to be low fat and fairly low protein. After you are approaching your
desired
weight you can start 'cheating' on this and have the occasional high fat /
high
carb meal (high protein also). I think the basic idea with cycling the
carbs
is to keep the liver glycogen from always being filled.

Also, I think you can get very lean and stay at a low body fat still
following
the 2 carb up meals per week without any danger. I think the 'feature' of
adding
more carb meals in a given week is more in line with giving some that have
reached
their target weight more options when eating. Personally, I am very
comfortable
eating fairly low carb all the time, but for some I can understand they feel
deprived. I think a few carb ups during the week are effective in keeping
thyroid
hormone normal and tops off muscle glycogen (only really important for
strenuous
exercise). Additionally, his limit of carbs per day for the normal diet
during
low carb is 60 grams, not all that low. You may or may not be in ketosis as
defined by keto stick urine test, but that really doesnt seem to be all that
important.
