Opportunities for Graduate Study

Departments of History, Geography, and Biology

Memorial University of Ne
wfoundland

Dr. Arn Keeling, Department of Geography, Dr. John Sandlos, Department of History, and Dr. Yolanda Wiersma, Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland, are seeking two graduate students at the MA level to work on the project, “Abandoned Mines in Northern Canada: Historical Consequences and Mitigation of Current Impacts.” Funding for these positions is contingent on the success of a current grant application.

Position Available:

Two Year Masters (MA or M.Sc.) in Geography

Using facilities in Dr. Yolanda Wiersma’s Landscape Ecology and Spatial Analysis (LESA) Lab in the Biology Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland, the successful graduate student will use Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcInfo GIS software to analyze landscape and ecological changes in the regions surrounding our five case study communities.

Comprehensive funding packages (minimum $12,000/a) are available), with opportunities to augment the amounts through scholarships or Graduate Assistantships.

Memorial University of Newfoundland is one of Canada’s leading comprehensive research institutions. It hosts the largest library in Atlantic Canada in addition to specialized research centres such as the Maritime History Archive and the Centre for Newfoundland Studies. The university is located in St. John’s, a unique and culturally vibrant city set within stunning natural beauty.

Interested applicants should contact:

Dr. Arn Keeling20([log in to unmask]) or Dr. Yolanda Wiersma ([log in to unmask])

Although the funding packages are tied to the researchers, prospective students must follow the formal application process for graduate school at Memorial University of Newfoundland. For more information on the School of Graduate Studies go to http://www.mun.ca/sgs/home/.
