Dear Supporter,

Since we launched our Burma photo petition earlier this summer almost a thousand of you have joined in. Thank you if you have already added your photo. If not there is still time to get involved. You’ll be joining former political prisoners from Burma and prominent world figures like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, chair of The Elders.

Archbishop Tutu said "For me, Honorary Elder, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the living symbol of the Burmese people’s hope and courage. She is the embodiment of their determination to live in freedom, health and prosperity. That is why I have written her name on my hand.
 
There are thousands of others who are also imprisoned and detained in Burma. Each of them is a sign of great hope, determination and courage. Please join Amnesty, the Elders and our fellow activists by naming each of Burma’s political prisoners, by holding that person’s name up and demanding their release".

If you haven’t already will you act today and join our photo petition? As the first elections in Burma for more than 20 years approach, we urgently need to put pressure on Burma's military rulers to respect human rights and to release political prisoners.

All the photos will be visually presented in Brussels at October's Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) of leaders from Asia and Europe. We'll use this opportunity to urge these leaders to take action to demand both freedom for Burma's political prisoners, and real human rights improvements across the country.

This photo action has been inspired by the work of James Mackay, a London-based documentary photographer. He has photographed more than 160 former Burmese political prisoners – some in exile and some still in Burma. You can see the photos and hear James speak at the Human Rights Actions Centre in London in October: 

7 October: Burma: Photographing a secret state Discussion featuring award winning photographer James Mackay and reporter and documentary maker Evan Williams (CH4 Dispatches) Book now 

29 September - 13 October: Even though I am free, I am not  Award-winning exhibition by documentary photographer James Mackay who photographed and interviewed more than 160 of Burma's former political prisoners. Open Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm. Admission is free and no booking is required. Find out more
