I have revised the "Welcome Letter" that new subscribers receive when
subscribing to CHOMSKY.

This is a good time for your input. The Welcome Letter has a tendency to
set the tone and feel for the list. What you see below is a major
revision from what you probably received when you subscribed. Please
feel free to edit all aspects of the Welcome. Grammar/punctuation/concept
etc. Feel free to be critical, there's no ego here.

Take a good look and the purpose of the list. How would you
enhance that purpose? Does it meet your purpose for joining this list?
If not then what should be added/deleted? Does this Welcome attract the
people who will make a strong list?

Please direct your replies to the list. Of course, if you prefer to send
them privately I'd be more that happy to accept your private comments.

Subject: Welcome to CHOMSKY!

Welcome to the discussions of the philosophy, work and influences
of Noam Chomsky.

The CHOMSKY list is an international network for discussing of the ideas
of Noam Chomsky.

The list is intended as a resource for young people, students, admirers,
organizers, scholars and those interested in the work, philosophy,
political ideas and scholars' doing research on Noam Chomsky's
contribution to linguistics.

The purpose of the list is to:

1. To serve as a forum for the free expression of political ideas.

2. The scholarly discussions of linguistics.

3. To be a resource to its members, by continually identifying the
thousands of resources, materials, organizations and Internet sites
revolving around the work, philosophy, political ideas of Noam Chomsky.

4. A clearinghouse for the distribution of information on academic and
political conferences, publication opportunities, fellowship information,
academic grants, and job openings of interest.

Subscribers are encouraged to post questions, comments, or announcements
of interest to individuals working on topics related to Chomsky's writings
and lectures. The Chomsky list is without restriction according to
interest or professional affiliation.

The CHOMSKY discussion list is not devoted to any particular niche within
the scope of Chomsky's oeuvre, but instead welcomes contributions on any
aspect of the full range of Chomsky's contribution to contemporary
political stance and linguistic scholarship. According to citation
indexes in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Noam Chomsky is the
most cited living author and ranks in the top ten ever -- just behind
Shakespeare, Plato and Freud. Discussions of the contributions of other
important thinkers who have developed or criticized aspects of Chomsky's
work and political activity are also welcomed.

Things to remember:
-------------------

1. Many people on this list may have differing opinions from your own.
   That is O.K.

2. Try to be helpful with your comments.

3. Treat people as you want to be treated. Don't be afraid to go
"off-line" and have a private conversation/arguments with those that
you may not agree with. Bring the important facts/outcomes back to the
   list (minus the personal attacks).

4. All posts are archived and accessible to the entire world. When you
write something it becomes a matter of permanent history of the Internet.
