I haven't been following the whole "reasonable man" thread (having missed
three days last week with a fever) but I have this anecdote to add:

Our physical plant department professional staff (of which I am a member)
recently got sexual harrassment training from the campus human resources
director (a woman who, fortunately, has a sense of humor). At one point she
was talking about the subjectivity of what sexual harrassment is or what is
and isn't, etc. She said that it has been legally determined that if "a
reasonable woman" (the actual phrase) would say a certain action is
harassment then it is. One of our trades supervisors promptly said
something to the effect of "good luck finding one of those." The rest of us
were amazed that the law could be based on such a subjective concept but Ms.
HR Dir. insisted that was the ruling.

Who/what is this "reasonable man," I suppose he represents the "average
Joe?" Ruth
