Re: Charred finish - take a look into dry ice blasting.  Dry ice blasting is often used for fire/disaster remediation.

Hi Cuyler,
 
Terry move on from Head Smashed in a while ago and is now in Edmonton, not sure how to help with the charred finish, would have to see picture, you can send to me directly if you like, have blasted with baking soda (very slow but good for very delicate parts) and corn cob for rust removal, worked well.
