Ralph,
Look to New Haven! The Minhatten guys get it done here and then treble the
price back to you - or at least that is what I have heard. Old friend and
associate - John Cavaliere of Lyric Hall Antiques - specializes in gilt
frames and art restoration. He is in New York every couple of weeks, too.

Subject: [BP] Conservation Question
I have an 1880's gilded neo-Grec picture frame (surrounding a needlework GAR
"picture" complete with eagle, flags and guns) that I would like to have
restored by somebody who can be trusted 1) not to ruin it and 2) not to
bankrupt me. Have been referred to fancy picture frame stores in Minhattan,
but my budget is more in the Jersey range.
The frame has damage to the gilding and a fair amount of lost gesso in an
egg-and-dart band at the perimeter of the frame, so it needs considerable
gesso work as well as regilding.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks.
Ralph
