Brian,

You bring up an interesting point which is the restoration and

repopulation of ghetto. I get this magazine called Orion (Rudy turned me

on to it though he might not know that) and there was a photo-article

some time back re: urban ecology of ghetto. It was distrubing. I do not

have the impression that NOLA was ever anything to compare to the sheet

metal sheds that I saw over the hill in Mexico, or wherever I think

outside the US we go off the tourist track. John Nichols in Guatamala w/

a hooker sort of epiphany. I am curious to what extent NOLA will be

repopulated not by wanna-be middle class for the tourist industry as

much as by the illegal aliens we keep hearing about on Lou Dobbs.

Particularly that there is such a desperate need for an unskilled

workforce right about now. For those comng to the US from even worse

places NOLA could be a significant upgrade.

From an Amazon Review:

An Undiscovered Classic, With A Pleasant (For Some) Hitch, October 17, 2006
Reviewer:J. Reynolds (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews

This is a great old bath soap, extremely effective against dirt and grease,
and wonderful for its aroma. After I began using Safeguard a few years ago, I
noticed that women increasingly wanted to be near me. I would find that, on
elevators and in other tight spaces, they would crowd in close to me (pretending

they could not help it). In stores and libraries, at pharmacies and DVD rental
places, in church and while buying groceries, I find myself quickly
surrounded by women who appear to be subliminally drawn to the Safeguard aura.
It's not
that they want to visit or anything -- they don't ask me out, and stuff of
that nature, like with the Aramis cologne -- but they do have a strong
subconscious desire to be near me... and it's definitely the Safeguard.

Older-style castles - keeps, really - sometimes have irregular patterns of
projecting stones or bricks. They are not decoration, and they look to me like
they could only serve to provide an attacker an aid in scaling the walls.

What are these things, and why?

yeah, i know what you mean, but the examples I've seen have too many, in too

i also sometimes see the detail in 20th century revivalism when "medieval" is

the style requested by the client, although that is not really relevant here.

From their spacing they resemble the projecting ends of log joists. Maybe they

are a masonry representation of a traditional log construction.

NOW I see. You're talking about the randomly spaced lighter spots on the
wall? My best guess is that they may be infill at cavities in the wall which
rec'd log outriggers for repairs/repointing work. This is a not unusual feature

on medieval stone walls, and is a left- over from Roman construction - the
cavities are still open on the Pont du Gard, the coliseum and Maison Carre at
Nimes, and many of the Roman structures in southern Gaul. The Palais du Papes
in Avignon is similarly pocked.
