while in grad school I worked for a guy in the engineering school who had a
grant to study exactly this problem. I ran into him last winter, and he
apparently has had some success, at least enought to take out (or start
to?) a patent on the process. He's since left the Engineering school, and
is now set up in Red Hook, Brooklyn. e-mail me off list if you'd like more
info (such as I can give it).
