Refresh my memory - this was a thread a decade ago and I cannot find it in  
the archives.   Why was the typical tile in the 1910s was the glassy,  
translucent stuff you see in the subway and bathrooms, and later tile - post  
1940? - is more opaque, ceramic-y, not so translucent? 
 
Something about lead, as I recall.   c
