Historic Masonry - Architectural Symposium on Lime Mortars
Chicago - June 3 & 4, 2003
Are lime mortars truly a better choice as we've been told? In Europe, the
use of lime putties and hydraulic limes in mortars for building conservation
is widespread and well accepted.
Stafford Holmes, a world-renowned British architect of Rodney Melville and
Partners will be leading an architectural symposium on building lime at the
U.S. Heritage Group Training Center in Chicago on June 3 & 4, 2003. He is a
member of the British Standards Institute Committee for Building Limes.
Stafford is the co-author of a new book, Building with Lime
(http://www.buildingconservation.com/books/a23.htm). He is currently
researching the use of hydraulic limes in structural engineering at the
Interface Analysis Centre at Bristol University.
Rodney Melville and Partners Chartered Architects have been specifying
lime mortars for the ongoing exterior masonry conservation work at Hardwick
Hall for over 30 years. Hardwick Hall, built in 1591, is possibly the
finest example of Elizabethan architecture in England-
(http://www.cressbrook.co.uk/features/hardwick/).
Anne Sullivan, AIA, senior associate with Johnson Lasky Architects in
Chicago, and John Speweik, vice president of U. S. Heritage Group and
co-author of National Park Service Preservation Brief 2, "Repointing Mortar
Joints in Historic Masonry Buildings"-
(http://www2.cr.nps.gov/tps/briefs/brief02.htm), plan to join Stafford
Holmes to compare lime mortar performance in the U.S. and England.
This panel of experts will explore and discuss American and English case
studies in the use of hydraulic lime and lime putties. The symposium will
also feature site visits to recent hydraulic lime and lime putty mortar
projects in the Chicago area and demonstrations of lime mortar preparation
and application by certified masons.
The two-day symposium will be held at the U.S. Heritage Group Training
Center in Chicago, June 3 & 4, 2003. For more information call 773-286-2100.
