T.,
The oldest house still standing in BC is a privately owned home in the James Bay area near downtown Victoria, a home (importantly to some) not open to the public.
The Helmcken House is second oldest, but ahhhhh, the tourism writers certainly have a delicious time negotiating facts with their carefully created fine print.
"Now the oldest house in British Columbia on its original site that still opens for the public, Helmcken House offers you a fascinating glimpse into the way life was lived over a hundred years ago."

Subject: [BP] Painted Floor Cloth
Does anyone have a good reference to the materials used to prepare and paint residential floor cloths, such as a kitchen floor cloth, in the period 1885 to 1910? Also interested in typical designs.
I am now working in the exhibit department at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, BC and loving every minute of it. In addition to making a rubber mold for casting replicas of a crab, I am involved in the recreation of a kitchen floor cloth for the second oldest house in BC.
