Possibly also look at Vinux which has a screen reader which boots with it.

Hi Scott, I haven't messed with Ubuntu for a while, but if memory serves,
you press Alt F1 to get to the command line and just type orca.  If that
doesn't work, try Alt F2.  It should work from a USB drive, as I know
that it works from a live CD!
