nah. Don't think it's strictly american. I got called a lid once when  
I tuned my transmitter too close to someone calling cq...I was, at  
the time, appropriately embarrassed, even though the guy didn't know  
it was me specifically. I did, though, when I finished and very  
distinctly heard "di-dah-di-dit di-dit dah-di-dit" come back at me.)
