Hi Gary.

I was going to comment on the Kenwood R5000. It depends quite a bit on
what it has with it for accessories. If it is just the R5000 by itself,
I'd probably try about $350, but if it has the VC20 VHF converter and the
filters, then it is probably worth probably more like $450 to $500. The
R5000 had a pretty decent receiver, about comparable to the receiver in the
TS440S. The only negative that I've ever heard about the radio is that the
internal power supply generated quite a bit of heat and there were some
problems that tended to occur with the radio because of this, so if you get
the radio with the DCK-2 DC kit installed, it might be better to run it on
an external 13.8 VDC supply. One very nice feature of that radio is that
you can switch filters independently of the mode setting, which can be an
extremely hand feature for medium wave DXing as it is often helpful to
stick the SSB filter in when trying to listen to foreign signals that come
through in between the American channels (not everyone uses 10 kHz channel
spacing).

I've never heard the VC20 so I don't know how good or bad the VHF converter
was.
