Another option is to use your TS-2000.  Although you don't have a rig for Sky 
Command, I operated mine on cross-band repeat.  I used it to talk to the group 
on 3976 while I was out around town using my HT.

But, if you want to do it on the same band, you'll need a duplexer.  I think, 
depending on what you exactly want to do, it might be a bit more complicated.

I don't know the answers, but if you can link to a link station on
echo-link, you might find some.  That sounds like a big project for a small
result.  How far from home will you usually need to be and still connect to
echo-link?  It's not the band alone, power to is an issue.  If you are
running five watts, listening on the same band shouldn't be effected I would
think.
