Hi Keith, if I remember correctly, the ic-78 is a European version of the
718, and although almost an exact copyy, using the same manual, it indeed
does not have even a socket for insertion of the ut102 voice chip, which is
used in the 718. Being ignorant of this fact, about three years ago, I
purchased, through either eham.net or qth.com, an ic-78, in hopes of putting
a voice chip into it, and having basically a 718, for less money. Well,
after having sighted help with the manual, and trying to find a place in the
radio for insertion of the voice chip, I went on the [log in to unmask] site,
and was told by a couple of folks, the "straight scoop," at which news, I
sadly sold or swapped the 78, and eventually had and used a 718. Which,
with its' front firing speaker, built in keypad, and available DSP, is a
pretty fair hf rig.
