Hi All,

I had quite a few responses to my query about Hops being gluten free. My
feeling at the end of it all is that hops on it's own is okay.

"Hi all. I want to take a herbal remedy which contains hops. Because of
it's association with beer, I'm feeling a twinge of doubt. Can anyone
please shed some light on this for me please?"

To my knowledge hops is from barley.

My brother in law home brews his own beer. He grows his own hops for the
process. They are some kind of outdoor climbing plant--definitely not a
grain.

Hi Russell, it's the barley malt that introduces gluten to beer. Hops
should be fine.

In beer it's the malt used that can harm you, so the Hops are OK.

Hops are totally GF unless they are contaminated by gluten
during the packing stages. This could happen in a Health
Food shop or Home Brew shop, so you need to make sure that
you buy from a well informed one. Hops are actually the
flowers of a dicoteledonous plant about as far away from
wheat as it is possible to get in the plant kingdom.

Hops is in the hemp family-not remotely related to grains. But it is close to
buckwheat, and I know people who are allergic to both of these, so you may
need to watch for allergic reactions after a while.
My guess is that it is the barley in beer that's the problem, and that hops
are OK.

Regards,

Russell
