I recently purchased an off-brand 17" monitor (quality video, unknown
Taiwanese manufacturer). It was $550 (15.9" viewable image size, .28 dot
pitch, 3 year warranty), and -- believe me -- I did my homework. I found
it locally and avoided shipping charges.

You may want to "read the fine print." Some companies offer (legally, if
you are told) remanufactured, rebuilt or repaired PC equipment at
drastically reduced prices. This is not to say that I have a problem
with remanufactured/rebuilt equipment -- I have even had a Seagate hard
drive that was rebuilt -- but you still want to watch the fine print so
you know what you are getting.

If course, you could be seeing promotional pricing, usually as an effort
to generate sales of other equipment.

Also, be sure that the price quoted was not for a monitor purchased with
a complete system. Also be sure that you weren't reading information
from a wholesaler, or from a company that quotes prices for volume sales.

If the monitor -is- rebuilt, be sure to ask about warranty, expected
current condition, and availability of a driver/INF file for Win95 or NT.
