About the gout...

Gout is created by build up of protein digestion byproducts, called uric
acid. It is related to urea, which is a byproduct of protein digestion
which is excreted in the urine. The uric acid builds up in the joints
and creates severe, painful attacks. The classic sign for a gouty
attack is that the patient will complain that the weight of the bed
sheets is too painful for their feet!

Short of taking medication that decreases the build up of these
byproducts, the only way around gout is to limit protein intake and
increase water consumption. This will help reduce the production of the
offending byproduct and increase its elimination.

I know Atkins diet is based on high protein intake, but your boyfriend
may not be metabolically cut out for so much protein. Maybe he should
try the Zone, or some other. more moderate proetin diet..

Best of luck,
Caroline, MD
