The Hellers and (I believe) the Eades suggest that high levels of insulin
drive down brain serotonin levels. They do not give specific references
and I don't know of any myself, I wish I did. I do know that I have been
diagnosed with clinical depression, a problem that runs in my family, and
that since going on a basic low-carb diet I have had better medication-free
control of depression than I have at any other time in my life. Remember
also that depression is a common hypoglycemic reaction, but if you're on a
good lowcarb diet you should have no trouble at all with hypoglycemia. I
have heard of others having similar results. So I would not worry overmuch
unless you've got an ongoing problem.
