Well, I have my home Windows 7 PC here, and my work laptop.  So I do have a
back-up for the home PC if things go wrong.

However, your solution probably is ultimately the best.

My take on this is that you'll get a virus someday despite what program
you're using. So I keep my Windows 7 machine backed up and use a Linux
machine to restore it. The two machines don't know about each other.
