All I know is that the Freedom Scientific Tech Support folks have told me to
stay away from Avast, due to known issues with Jaws.
What is interesting to me is that I used it for a time, and didn't notice
any issues, but I'm almost afraid to go back and try it now, since I think
I've finally got my Windows 7 home PC up and running as it should be.
I can't speak to the accessibility or inaccessibility of Avast, since my
sighted XYL helped me install it, and I just let it run in the background.
I think it was working, although I might not have run it long enough to
really be sure.

I'm curious about a couple of claims about avast. First, I use avast, and
have installed a new version of JAWS and updated it without having to
disable avast. Secondly, I haven't found avast accessible at all. Am I
missing something?

that the latest version isn't accessible with Jaws.
I could roll back to an earlier version, but who knows if the virus
definitions would be kept up to date in the older version.
I am thinking of going back to avast, but really don't want to have to
remove it when updating or reinstalling Jaws.
Some have suggested Avira to me, and I'm seriously considering that.
Others have suggested Panda, but I don't know much about it.
It amazes me that this is so difficult! (smile)

Tom, you will get many opinions here.
The vipre people are very helpful, and their software worked well with
screen readers, that is until the 2015 version.
Sometimes it takes over the entire micro processor, and you loose speech.
That was with window-eyes system access and nvda.
The 2014 software with the 2015 deffinitions works fine, but they will have
to send you a link to the older software.
Avast works very well, but you have to disable it when you install or
upgrade jaws.
The program interface is very navigable with jaws, so adjustments can be
made.
I don't personally think much of AVG, and microsoft doesn't recommend
security essentials as a primary protection method.
Who am I to argue with them?
Anyway, for what its worth, those are my thoughts.

Hello, all.
I know this might be considered off topic, but then again, if you get a
virus, and your computer becomes non-functional so that you can't post to
the list, I guess my question can be considered to be relevant.
Anyway, I'm wondering what basic anti-virus prrogram people on the list use?
As you may recall, I have had a number of issues with my home Windows 7 PC
this summer, but I think they have now been resolved, and I want to get a
good anti-virus program back on that machine before I start using it
regularly again.
I've posted quiries to the two Jaws lists I'm on, and opinions vary widely.
I'd prefer a free program, but will pay for one if that would be the best.
I've not had the greatest luck with A V G, since the latest update seemed to
slow my system down considerably, and I also found it did not catch
everything.
I tried Avast for a while, but the folks at F S suggest that sometimes,
Avast can conflict with Jaws, although I didn't exxperience this issue.
Others have suggested Avira, Viper, Panda, and Microsoft Essentials.
I guess sometimes it just boils down to the luck of the draw, but I like to
be as informed about these sorts of things before making a decision.
I'm using Jaws 16 with Windows 7.
