First, like Mike said, it is almost impossible to find parts for the TS-440,
and it is just as difficult to find anyone to work on them. Then, if you did
find someone to work on it, it could cost you more to fix it than the rig is
worth. It is possible that you could end up paying someone to check it out
for you and charge their minimum fee for checking it out only to be told
that they cannot repair it, and then, you would have the expense of shipping
to that person and the cost of the return shipping plus their minimum charge
for a basic service charge.

Taking all of that into consideration, assuming everything else works okay
on your TS-440, if it were mine, I would either build or purchase a very
basic audio amplifier and plug it into the speaker or headphone output jack,
and bingo! You have it fixed for very little cost!! You can find very
inexpensive audio amplifiers that would serve your purpose very
inexpensively online from several different sources.

Yes, I've tried all kinds of things. Everything from lightly tapping on the
AF gain dial, plugging and unplugging external speakers, leaving the rig on
for many hours in case heat improved things. I even opened up the rig and
made sure that there were no loose connections in and around the speaker
etc. Good thing is that it is not an intermittent problem.

Before you look too hard for a repair shop, try this.

plug an external speaker into the speaker jack on the back, and see if that
fixes it.

Or, push a plug into this jack several times, and remove it.

This is just to be sure that jack has not closed just enough to short out
the receiver audio. I have seen that happen.

As for repair shops for the TS440, you need to be aware that many of the
parts for that radio are no longer available from Kenwood, or from anywhere
else other than another used TS440. So, most shops will no longer take them.

This is unfortunate, because the 440 is a fine radio.
