Mat,

In the Kenwood's you need to activate the cw break-in.  It is the same 
key as the VOX while in voice.  I *think* on the 480  it is the 8 key on 
the keypad.    Without this turned on, you just hear the sidetone and no 
tx out.

The key operates seperatly for the  voice and cw modes.
