I use the Win96 software and Radio reference and for
that alone the Win96
software is doable.  I have not tried programming the
Pro-96 from the
keyboard but I'm able to do the basics and
programmable band edge scanning
((search scan) is easy from the keypad.  Using Win96
software alone (without
Radio reference) is not very easy.

I don't know about the 500, but the Pro-96 is
reasonable and the software
doesn't work that well, but programming via keypad
isn't too bad.
