Mark,
If you are looking at the high end of the band, you should start with the
whips all the way in. Then move them both out in small identical
increments, if the resonant frequency of the dipole is too high. If it is
too low, you will probably need to trip the whips slightly.
Do not try to force the whips in farther than they want to go easily. I
think the manufacturer fixed that problem, but in the early days of
Hamsticks, I forced the whip in too far and burned up the antenna with less
than 100 watts.
