The cat 5 cable consists of twisted pairs which must be connected to
specific pins on the jack.  So its a bit more than connecting an arbitray
wire from pin1 to pin1 and testing the connection with an audible meter.
If you wired one end with the proper colors, you could use the meter to
wire the other end.  My wife helped me do a few cables, but they are also
inexpensive to buy.
