Lid is a term that means "Poor operator" (poor as in not good, not
poor as in broke). If you tune your 1,500-watt linear on top of the
hurricane watch net, someone might say you're a lid. (I would.) I
think the term originates with land-line telegraphers: newer
telegraphers were, if I remember what someone told me correctly,
called lids because they might use a coffee can lid to make their
telegraph sounders more distinct, or something like that.
