I was diagnosed with CD in March of this year and have been on a GF diet since that time. I had some bloodwork run a few weeks ago due to weight gain of 45 pounds since that time and pain/stiffness in my joints. I wanted to make sure my thyroid was O.K. and that I do not have rheumatoid arthritis. Those blood tests came back O.K but my total cholesterol was at 211. I was totally surprised to have high cholesterol after being so sick from malnourishment and everything that goes along with CD prior to the diagnosis. My triglycerides and HDL were also out of wack but I don't remember the numbers (I have a call into my physician's office to get those numbers). My physician prescribed Lipitor but did not talk about going on a diet to reduce the cholesterol. After thinking about my diet, I have been eating more dairy products and corn chips than I had prediagnosis so maybe this could account for high cholesterol. I already walk 2-3 miles a day 6 days a week so exercise is not the issue. Although I am distressed with gaining 45 pounds in such a short amount of time I am not yet what I would consider overweight but my clothes are definitely fitting tighter. My physician also wants me to do a treadmill test. My understanding is this is because of the history of heart disease in my family and my low HDL numbers. I also have very small nodules on my thyroid and am having further testing done on those to determine if they are benign (which I'm guessing they will be). I did check the archives and did see that others have also dealt with high cholesterol along with CD. I would truly appreciate any input anyone else could give me about this. I really would rather try to change the cholesterol through diet rather than Lipitor if possible. Thank you in advance for any positive and helpful feedback.
