I've been on a grad student budget for a few years now, and can relate to
your dilemma.  Here are some things I've done to cut expenses:

1.  Shop local supermarkets almost daily to catch marked-down meats.  I stay
    away from pork and poultry usually, but the beef is often better when
aged a
    bit.  I either cook it right away or freeze for later use.

2.  Shop local flea markets for produce - much cheaper and great selection.
I can
    often find "yard" produce too, from older trees with little or no
treatment with
    insecticides.  Most of this produce is really ripe and needs use quickly,
but
    most of it surpasses the more expensive supermarket stuff in quality and
    flavor.

3.  Buy canned fish in quantity when on sale.  Again, flea markets will often
    have dinged canned goods at a big discount, and my local 99 cent store
    often has wonderful European tinned herring, sardines, etc. at a great
    price.

4.  Fish or make good friends with a fisherperson.  I'm fond of some fish
that are
    not popular (mackerel, amberjack, grunts) that people often throw away.

5.  Eggs are often offered at dirt cheap prices - but watch for freshness.

6.  When you have the time to do the prep yourself, you can save a lot by
    buying vegetables and doing your own salad chopping and prep.  Since this
    often yields more than one person can use, consider sharing with someone
    else (cooperative buying and/or prep)
