The brands of AGP video cards you mentioned are good. I've used them
ATI-Nvidia Geforce ATI Rage, RageII-Radeon etc.etc. .Did you try updating
your mother boards software? Try re-installing or updating  the latest VIA
drivers. Set your mother board BIOS to default to see if it makes any
difference.
Install  a different mother board like Asus, or MSI with a better VIA chip
set configuration.
Just some suggestions.
