Probably animal fat.....but from the feet I've seen on
people who don't wear shoes, the soles of their feet
become very thickened and in many cases very
rough and cracked.    They wouldn't want to soften
them at all as they need their feet to be very tough,
not tender.   I watched one woman using a pocket
knife to pare away the shaggiest bits of her soles.

When I work in the yard barefoot, my feet become
very dry and my heels will crack......handling soil
makes my hands dry also, but I hate the feel of
wearing gloves.   Something in the soil seems
to draw moisture away from both hands and feet...
