Hi Betty,

"To Grok" is a martian word (cf Robert A Heinlein "Stranger in a Strange
Land" (1961)) which literally means "to drink". Valentin Michael Smith is
brought up from infancy on Mars (by Martians), and when he is brought back
to Earth 20 years later by a rescue mission he "groks the human race". It is
a quasi religious metaphor in Martian culture for having a profound
appreciation for something.

Us Nerds have rather taken the word over - its in the 1998 New Hackers
Dictionary.

More than you ever wished to know!!!

Deri James
